Main Kalyug ki Sita hun

Ramayan being telecast-ed on TV during this Quarantine gives me  mixed feeling and often fill me with feminist thoughts. I tried to put a few words together. A pair of words together to rhythm and  trying not to stretch it to much as I can keep going with it...

"Pati- Patni ka ye pyara rishta, Pyar se nibhaungi,
Na hi tum Raja banna, na Raani main banpaungi,
Saath-Saath hoga chalna humko, peeche na rehpaungi,
Haanth pakadna saath nibhana, hukum na suntejaaungi,
Ma-Papa ki pyari pari hun, kahin kabhi nakhare hi dikhaungi,
Tere ghar ko apana bana har kona pyaar se sajaungi,
Har pal tera saya banke , teri shaan badaungi,
Par jo tune man ko dukhaya, khud ko na sehelaungi,
Meri hi bhi ek pehechaan hai, main apane pankh felaungi,
Na kapado se, na Naam se, na chehere se samajh me aaungi,
Apani udaan ki rekha khud apane haanth banaungi,
Jab bhi kisi ne seema todi, Kaali main banjaungi,
Main kalyug ki Sita hun, khud apani Aan bachahungi"

With this I have so many questions in head..why did Sita ji waited for Shree Ram, why couldn't she fight for herself. OK, let's consider women in those days were not physically and mentally ready to fight back. But then we always have goddesses who are the symbol of women power, were they just for worship idols. Second question which immediately struck my head is why did Sitaji proved herself through Agni-pariksha, were her words not enough for every one to count on? Have anyone asked Ramji for his purity or loyalty. we always believed his words so why not Sitaji had the same privilege. Another thing which makes me worry is that the society while appreciating the great Indian mythology, should not take us to unacceptable expectations.
The reason why it scares me most is the resemblance of  Sita's abduction with many known cases in news and the incapable society which easily blames a women for being modern or forward but continuously failing to give a safe world to live in. That's actually not new women were neither safe then nor now, its time when we have to take charge of our safety ourselves.

P.S. I am not an atheist and have full faith in religion, but the beauty of my religion is I can question and clear my doubts.

  3. Hey gal I liked the blog very well written my perspective is Sita did fight with Ravan in whatever way she could. If she would have give up she could have been Ravan's queen. But unfortunately she cldn fight against Ram may be she tried but i would say Ram failed to protect his wife but he was busy protecting other women

  4. Very well marked down thoughts. I loved your poem.
But without true knowledge of Ram's character, the critics would judge him, citing the misconstrued incident of him questioning his wife’s character and abandoning her. After an insight into his life long decisions, his compassion, and his empathy, one would argue that it would be totally out of character for Ram to distrust Sita’s devotion.
And rightly so, Ram’s faith in Sita is invincible. His love and respect for her are as true as is her essence. It is she who convinces him that as a leader, his prime responsibility is towards his people and their mandate and that he should let her go. He does not abandon her. Fate separates them. He suffers as much as she does; in my opinion, probably a little more, for he has to also live with the guilt of letting the love of his life go.
